Ranger, although you haven't told us the type, brand, and model, of your 
modem; I'm guessing you've been looking at instructions for Ubuntu prior 
to 8.10, which now has network configuration under the 
System/Preferences tab

If you check System/Help and Support/Connecting to the internet/ you 
will hopefully follow through to the solution you're looking for.

If that's not enough, your providing more detailed information would 
help those here to help you.
