I would like to ask, why are you still using Windows 98. MS had
dropped support and all updates for that OS about a year of more
ago...What you have is what you have and no updates are available
which leaves you OS open to anyone who has a kiddie script.

I would suggest running the LiveCD and doing an install of Linux.
During that install, you will have the opportunity to shrink your
current partition and make room for Linux. As I suggested, you should
stop using Win98 for security reasons........shrink your win98
partition all the way down....once Ubuntu is installed, you should be
able to mount the other partition and grab your personal files and
bring them over to Linux........Once your files are over, come back
for instructions on removing windows98.

You don't have to do this, but Windows 98 is a virus and malware
sponge and you are just asking for your computer to become a member of
someone's BOTNET.
