I have an Ubuntu server running my domain, and setting up Apache was
easy, setting up MySQL was easy, setting up PHP was easy, even setting
up Ruby on rails was easy, but setting up e-mail is unbelievably
impossible. Why?

just look at the Ubuntu server documentation:
https://help.ubuntu.com/8.10/serverguide/C/email-services.html
it's ridiculous!

I think I'm just going to use Gmail for my domain. I'd rather not,
because the whole point of having your own server is to be able to
control everything, and I wish I didn't have to give Google control of
my e-mail, but there is just no way I'm going to go through all that
trouble. Gmail is really really simple.

Don't worry, I'm not blaming Ubuntu. I'm just wondering why e-mail is
so complicated. It seems like such a simple thing...

Is there something like XAMPP for e-mail?
