I think you could boot a live distro. Probably the live 8.04 then you could have a look at the xorg.conf file ( /etc/X11/xorg.conf ) to see what it is. You could mount the hard disc partition somewhere and backup the xorg.conf on it then copy the xorg.conf from the live distro onto the hard disc then re-boot. I think that might fix it.
