I have rebooted and tried every method mentioned of rm....but the files are still there (taking up 4gb of space). I did another backup to a directory with a different name ..... so at least I have a backup ...... but removing a file should be a very basic operation. I originally formatted the drive under Windows using NTFS, perhaps this is a factor, though I thought that Linux could handle this.
Is there a simple method of Formatting under Linux (that can also be read in Windows) to save me from booting in Windows ?
