Before formatting the second partition use a XP Recovery cd to write
the Master Boot Record (MBR) which will get rid of grub stage 1. The
command is "fixmbr" (http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/483/
xp_repair_fix_master_boot_record_recovery_console/).
Otherwise if you delete your second partition first, Grub stage1 does
not know where to get the boot menu configuration and hence will grind
to an halt with probably "Error 11".
