The reason it's on the left right now is mostly a migration path. We used to have a tree-like view, so people would expect expanding on the left to show the sub-folders. I didn't want to change the meaning of a metaphor from one day to the next. We will revise the general design of the page in the following weeks, after a month or so on production I'm happy to consider moving it to the left or somewhere else more convenient.
* When clicking on a folder I expect it to expand in place, but instead I'm taken into the folder. It took me a while to figure out I needed to use the bread crumbs at the top to get back to the main folder. May that is just me. :-/
I think you're expecting the previous tree-like behavior ;)

This only happens for public files. In order to show you the picture we need to breach some security issues we're not comfortable doing.

* Related to the previous item... it took me a minute to figure out where the "Shared" folders were. I still have no idea what the icon is supposed to represent. Personally, I'd like to see shared items delineated somehow.
Agreed. My plan is to add small headings under each block of shares/udfs. I don't expect the icons to be anything more than visual cues to differences among the folders.
