I saw this issue again today. Linux Mint 10.04 Xfce (32bit). As before, installing latex-xft-fonts solved the problem.

Both look like a x. I tried changing the screen font but they still look the same. I am using Lyx 1.5.3-1 on Hardy. Lyx 1.5.3 on Windows does not have this problem. \cdot looks like a dot and \times looks like a x. I also checked with Lyx 1.5.5 on Fedora 9. The problem does not appear there.
