I am using a MIDI keyboard with MuseScore 2.0.0 on Ubuntu 15.04 just fine, but I can't speak for 14.04.
Try this... in Edit -> Preferences: - Under "Note Input" tick the "Enable MIDI Input" checkbox. - Under "I/O" select "ALSA audio". Now restart MuseScore and then plug in the keyboard and switch it on. My solution at the moment ist to work with 1.3 in Ubuntu and to use 2.0.1 with Wine.
