Using the Portable Settings feature of Audacity 2.1.3 got rid of it for me on Ubuntu Studio 16.04.1. Make it likely the bug is added in Ubuntu itself since it is not noticed anywhere else. It sure cut down on my frustation.

When I want to export an audio track, e.g. in MP3, the file extension in the Name bar is always AIFF. I have to change it manually. If I cange the filetype from the menu, the file extension remains AIFF. This is not an important bug, but the file extension should change when changing file type.
