This way I worked in a different distribution (using Cadence and some manual hacking) and it was quite convenient. ubuntustudio-controls i very convenient, but this scenario won't work, as any alsa module will be unloaded from pulseaudio when Jack is started, even when there is no actual conflict. I think there should be, at least, an option to stop unloading the possibly-conflicting modules. User would be responsible to configure PulseAudio in a way that doesn't conflict with Jack, but PulseAudio would still be able to control some hardware directly.
