Tried both usb3 and usb2 ports, on and off an (externally powered) USB hub. Strangely, a wireless mouse works - with the usb thumb in the same port that my wired mouse was not working on.... Has anyone tried compiling their own custom kernel and this becomes resolved? After the first apt-get update I noticed the following behaviour: after havig logged in, my USB mouse works normally for about ten seconds, then the cursor starts lagging a lot which makes the mouse pretty much unusable.
