I think I know what the problem is now. I opened the .png file with "Shotwell" instead of "Shotwell Viewer". Maybe the .jpg/.tif/.bmp files were displayed in Shotwell Viewer instead of Shotwell? That must be correct because I can not reproduce the problem.
