Hi! I am having similar problems with the network manager that comes with Ubuntu Studio. I am using a Clevo M570TU (http://www.clevo.com.tw/en/products/prodinfo_2.asp?productid=83). I am going to try to change the network manager to WiCD, to see if the problem is solved.
