I did install ubuntu studio 10.10 from USB, with two obstacles: 1. I used unetbootin to prepare the USB disk from the ISO, which chopped some overly long file names (because unetbootin apparently does not use rock ridge extensions). I fixed them manually (mainly pulseaudio stuff, that kernel module package the installer needs). I do wonder: unetbootin requires root priviledges ... I'd presume in order to simply loop-mount the ISO; because writing to the MBR of the USB disk would be no issue as a normal user is allowed to do that. But instead it chooses to parse the ISO file system itself, poorly... me don't like that app that much anymore:-/
2. The install procedure fails to find the "cdrom" unless I give the kernel parameter "cdrom-detect/try-usb=true". I got that hint from http ://die-klapsmuehle.org/2010/02/21/ubuntu-alternate-von-usb-stick- installieren/ . Generally, the alternate installer is not very helpful with error diagnostics ... at least one can deduce something from the 4th console. But in the end, the main trick was that magic switch to get the "cdrom" from USB. I faintly remember something about once trying to simply specify the (existing) block device and that didn't work either, but that may have been because of the broken file names, which also affected immediate installer stuff. So, the acutal ubuntu bug is point 2: One should more and more realize that installs occur from USB drives instead of wastefully burned optical media. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Studio Testers, which is subscribed to Ubuntu Studio. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/697774 Title: cant install ubuntustudio from USB stick Status in Ubuntu Studio: New Bug description: this guide from ubuntu server should work... https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuServerFlashDriveInstaller _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntustudio-testers Post to : [email protected] Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntustudio-testers More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
