I got the same error but under difference circumstances: A few weeks ago I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 3 (Natty Narwhal) and just now am receiving a "partial upgrade". (Doesn't Beta 1 come out next week?) When I accepted the upgrade I got the "Can't install ubuntu-desktop" error but no other errors. I'm am still upgrading as I write, so I will update this thread if I get any other errors.

Works like a charm...that is until today when I was told there were updates available (beagle and pidgin from memory). I said go for it, it said something about only being able to do a partial update, which I chose and now dist-upgrade is coming up with an error: "Can't Install Ubuntu-Desktop It was impossible to install a required package.
