Public bug reported:

It seems that not all packages are compatible. Some will run when certain others
aren't loaded - when they have no competition - and won't run when another
program
takes the resources..

It seems that to open one set of programs / mixers etc etc can preclude
the opening of others.

Example is that in one of my Ubuntu studio machines, Ardour / Rezound
loads just fine, On the my other one it says Jack is unavailable. And
that's straight after boot, from both machines. (The one that fails has
a Dell soundcard that I supported and recognized by the system).

Another example is that Audacity will load but can't move it's cursor to play a
file loaded,
but in the good machine it works just fine - same file. (Cursor keeps returning
to Zero after
play is requested - it moves then jumps back to Zero).

SUGGESTION

As per another of my Bug Reports, suggest that the Ubuntu Studio
Controls rewrite that is occurring at the moment also include
troubleshooting tools and cross-checking features to help Newbies (like
myself) to come to grips with the system, without spending days to get a
basic result.

This issue seems to depend on how buggy the system is. Therefore the
troubleshooting tools should also cross check the system itself, to see
if it's OK to run the Realtime Audio applications, as requested by the
User / Engineer / Muso. The tools should say what's driving what and
what's needed because of that and then reveal any bottlenecks before
they happen.
