Dear All (apologies for cross listing), You are all cordially invited to the first of our Lent term seminar series events at 5pm this coming Monday:
January 24 (Monday) 5pm in rooms 8 and 9 of the Faculty of Asian and Middle-Eastern Studies The Many Kings of Ming China Professor Craig Clunas Bio Craig Clunas is Professor of the History of Art at the University of Oxford. He has worked in the Victoria and Albert Museum, and taught at University of Sussex and SOAS. He has published extensively on Chinese culture and art history, principally in the Ming period. He is the author of, among others, <Superfluous Things: Material Culture and Social Status in Early Modern China> (Polity, 1991), <Fruitful Sites: Garden Culture in Ming Dynasty China> (Reaktion, 1996), <Art in China> (1997, Oxford University Press), <Pictures and Visuality in Early Modern China> (Reaktion, 1997), <Elegant Debts: The Social Art of Wen Zhengming> (Reaktion, 2004) and <Empire of Great Brightness: Visual and Material Cultures of Ming China, 1368-1644> (Reaktion, 2007). Abstract The lecture will address the role of the Ming dynasty ‘appanage kings’ (fanwang 藩王), and argue for the significance of their cultural patronage within the Ming empire. It will challenge their exclusion from most standard accounts of the period, and consider some of the historiographical reasons which have led to this marginalisation. Finally it will contend that a sufficient account of the Ming period needs to give more space than hitherto to the regional aristocracy. The talk is based on a recently-completed book manuscript, Screen of Kings: Art, Power and Imperial Clan in Ming China. The talk will be followed by an informal wine and biscuit reception. All are welcome.
