UK Government Announces Changes to Student and Post Study Work Visas - 23 March
2011

There has been much speculation in recent months about how the UK Government's
ongoing review of the UK's Points Based Immigration system will impact
international students and graduates. As of today things are getting clearer,
although the full detail will not be available until the 31 March 2011 when the
UKBA publishes the new Immigration Rules that will enable and guide the
implementation of the announced changes.

The Tier 1 PSW visa route IS going to be closed BUT not before April 2012, so
anyone eligible to apply before then should still be able to do so. It also
looks like university students on student or Tier 4 visas will continue to be
able to work full time in vacations and up to 20 hours a week during term time
(although as you know term time working is not encouraged at Cambridge!). Do
note that new fees for the PSW visa come into force on the 6th April 2011, £474
outside the UK, £594 for a postal application in the UK, and £918 for an
in-person application. See
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/tier1/poststudy/ for up to
date details and the latest application form and guidance for making
applications.

All the currently available information associated with the latest UK
Government announcement can be found at
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/newsarticles/2011/march/54-student-visas
, and most importantly in the Summary of The New Student Policy pdf that you
can download from there. These changes cover more issues than just working as
a student while studying in the UK, and the PSW visa route so they will be more
or less relevant to you depending on your personal circumstances. However,
until the Immigration Rules are published on 31 March it is unlikely that any
additional information will be available on how the changes will be implemented
in practice. To keep up to date on UKBA announcements go to
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/news-and-updates/

The Careers Services web pages for International Students are currently being
updated http://www.careers.cam.ac.uk/students/international/index.asp to
reflect all the recently announced changes to Tier 1 PSW visas etc. , and the
earlier announcements on changes to Tier 2 Sponsored, and Tier 1 General
visas, and will continue to be updated as and when more information becomes
available. In addition, a Careers briefing is being planned on "Working in the
UK as an international student or graduate" for Easter 2011 term (date, time
and place will be announced in the Careers Services' Easter term Diary, and via
a Click email): this will be an update on previous versions of this briefing,
the most recently delivered in November 2010.
