Levi, Man, you've been a saint.
Thanks for not getting frustrated, these guys (me too) are a hard
sell. I play D&D at the dragons keep on Thursdays, but I'd really
like to try Monsterapocalypse. I think it's great there's a hobby
game store that is generous in allowing people to walk in, offer to
teach people games and let people use someone else's games- that kind
of trust is rare. Really it is appreciated- perhaps we'll risk trying
something new and discover the great new games that have been going
around almost every night, although I suspect that the entire Utah
County Boardgame group won't show. Several reasons why" 1. Some of
these guys are married, and are limited to twice a month for game
nights. The group meets at Sanctuary 1st Friday of month and Games
People Play 3rd. Several also meet each Wed for game nights at
Boardgame Revolution. The other two Fridays most likely aren't
available, and what's to keep them, even if they had it open, from
participating in open MTG tournaments at the Provo Town Center store
for $7 entry fees.
So I would come more, but I'm taking 18 credits at BYU, dating a girl
(seriously), working two jobs, etc. My point is, Tuesday nights are
shot 'cause of a film class, and that's rotten luck because that's
your board game night, right? Fridays are packed aren't they?
2. These guys want a place they can go without competition. Some
place private, but this in all fairness is a nice way of saying they
want to be catered to. There is an element of elitism present here,
but in all fairness, not everyone frequenting all "our" game stores
are friendly, personable and social, and we know it. The Dragon Keep
unfortunately has a reputation for housing rabbles of geeks, not the
most hygenic, etc- but I've been there (about twice a week for the
last 2 months) and I see it's not the case. It IS a bit run down, and
the game selection isn't on par with stores that focus only on board
games, but those other stores pale with the dragon keep's hobby/
skirmish/comic and rpg selection. So why can't we just be friends?
3. I think the answer lies here: There's skeptics on both ends, and
then there's snobs. In addition, some just don't want to try, and
never will be interested in a game with a dragon, wizard, spell or
epic quest involved. It's a shame too, because such games cater to
their meticulous and complex nature, and think they'd enjoy
symbiotically with the heavy euros and boardgames. Some might be
offended I am attempting to represent them here, but I hope that we
can all admit we may all share the guilt, and we all could be a little
more open minded. For God's sake friends, we're gamers! Aren't we
those who are open to fresh ideas, and always on the cutting edge to
try the next best thing?
I consider this group a group aimed at having fun, and above all, to
enjoy one another's company. I may be alone in saying this, but I'd
love to see the group hold game nights here- it opens up the table
options more, right? This could surprise even the most experienced
board gamer into trying something new, and it would allow a lot of
nice people with no experience in board games to give them a try. I
hope everyone can see my effort here is to be more including and less
selfish in creating and providing a better, more quality experience,
before they see me pointing a finger.

As it is, I struggle attending BGR's game nights for this very
reason. I'm asked by Brant to be there in case newcomers show up. I
do, and several times no one comes and then I'm left out of the one
game going on (not enough players, or more often I'm just not
interested in the game). I suppose some would say this is my own
fault, but I see it as a duty to facilitate fun for others, something
that I feel is rare on these game nights- it feels as if the same
people pick the games week after week, which is ok provided they
consider everyone present, and that the games are something everyone
wants to play. Maybe, I'm being ironic here, and maybe some
disapprove when I say I consider myself a member of this group, but
I'd like to know that anyone can participate and enjoy themselves with
no previous experience. What we do makes us thinkers, and leaders. I
think we have potential to improve and open our wings to other,
potential friends. I apologize for preaching, if it comes across that
way, and I hope not to offend. Some small, insecure part of me wishes
to be friends to everyone in this group, because I admire you, look up
to you, and share a passionate interest and hobby with each of you. I
stress over dissensions, disagreements, and I tremble with paranoia
that a sour glance at times is directed my way. I just hope that
hasn't been felt by others, that there's respect, and that the games
don't become more important than the people- my girlfriend would be
proud that I added that.

I'd love to hear what you guys think- can we give Dragonskeep a
chance?
Have I made enemies from writing this?
Am I out of line?
Let me know, I'd like to hear our criticisms.

P.S.- Rachel and I went ring shopping this week! We're not
technically engaged yet (she needs to meet my parents over Christmas,
oy vey! (ironic for yiddish, ya I know)), but she and I are very
exited and just can't seem to keep it a secret! SEE YOU GAMERS
FRIDAY- LEVI, YOU UP FOR JOINING US ;) ???
