Ulrich Drepper, the glibc maintainer, has gone crazy and believes that static 
linking should never be used for anything:

(Somebody should tell him about execute in place support, about dynamic 
linking dirtying per-process physical pages, about portability between 
systems...  He doesn't seem to understand any of it, according to that 
rant...)

According to archive.org that page has been up since 2004...
