thanks for taking a look; if i have time this weekend i will also
attempt to see if i can figure out what is going on.

a good realworld example of this is nouveau + xorg-server.  nouveau
uses symbols from other X extension modules directly (which is bad; it
should declare these symbols as weak-symbols really, but that's for
another day.) but xorg-server needs to dlopen the module in order to
find out about the dependency on the other X modules.
