Yes, a mistake on my part. The driver missdetects the chip, and get several values wrong. (PHY included, which fooled me). The driver gets data from an eeprom, which my board do not have. The old 2.4 driver was patched to workaround this, applying the same changes to the 2.6 driver solves this. Making it work. Sorry for the noise, I should have checked the old driver first.
