The fact the devices aren't registering into /proc/devices indicates something
is
wrong -- without a device just making device file won't accomplish anything.
I recall the LDD2 examples worked on early 2.4 kernels, not later ones.
Caveat emporer...working through the LDD2 examples about 4 years I found
painful...
(the kernel is always a moving target)
