gcc-4.2.1
binutils-2.17
glibc-2.3.6

It uses arm-linux-*,  or i386-linux-*,  and doesn't care too much either
way.  There's nothing wrong with continuing to use a gcc-3.4 based tool
chain if it is doing what you want.

My advice,  if you don't know why you need a new toolchain, you don't
need it.

pros: better error/warning detection and possibly better optimisations
cons: better error/warning detection

Sometimes older apps will fail to build with a newer toolchain.
