Fine on the initrd, HOWEVER, you must pass a command line to the
kernel, or it will not have any console, and while it might boot
happily, you will have no indication of this on the terminal.
You will have to add a compiled-in command line in the kernel
configuration.
At a minimum, it should contain:
console=ttyS0,115200n8
or similar, to select the console port and parameters. (you may be
set for 19200, that's fine, just change the number to match the baud
rate)
You may also need to add a root= parameter, depending on where your
root filesystem is located.
