You know, it's been so long since I went through the toolchain trauma that I've psychologically blocked out most memory of exactly what I did. I do remember building something with dpkg-cross, but not being able to build/get some critical libraries with it and then downloading something else and unhappily wrapping it with checkinstall or something and hoping it would come back off cleanly later. Also, I couldn't get it working on amd64, so I'm building from an ia32 box.
