can not see map on ubuntu 6.10 edgy

can not see any map display (only gray area), although coordinates change when
moving cursor in the map window. Tried different data sources with no vail. The
same thing happens to nightly build on 11/25. uDig 1.0.6 works find on the same
machine and can display maps alright.
