4. create an irc pane, so programmers/developers/users may easily open dialog with others who are actively online, again, without having to open a separate application to do so. this way, if users and programmers are nailing down a bug or discussing a feature request, it's a piece of cake. also, if the user could easily display/send their os/config status to another udig user, that too would be helpful. of course, the argument is this is not an irc client, or a issue tracker... i understand this, but just thought i'd mention how nice and convenient it would be to consolidate such things within the udig gui, as to make it super easy to communicate and collaborate all things udig by and between realtime udig users.
This was suggested as a summer of code project; the eclipse plug-ins to do this are available - all it needs is a volunteer. To be "extra" cool the users could share the map they are working on (this is the idea here http://udig.refractions.net/confluence/display/HACK/GeoIRC) .

yes, it would be nice if one user could remote control the zoom, pan, selection, and so forth of the other remote user's udig interface(or multiple users at the same time, like 1 teacher and several students).

subethedit and coda(coda uses same code as does subethedit) are nice examples of document collaboration. it would indeed be nice to have this type of control within udig.
