In addition to Franks advice on the JRE… The SDK Quickstart is intended for training courses (and thus only reviewed when we teach one! Or when a volunteer such as yourself gives it a go).
We try and encourage active developers to follow our development environment (http://udig.refractions.net/confluence/display/ADMIN/02+Development+Environment) instructions (and fork uDig on github) so you can easily feed us fixes as needed. That is purely us being greedy (we have to encourage developer involvement after all).
