In addition to Franks advice on the JRE…

The SDK Quickstart is intended for training courses (and thus only reviewed
when we teach one! Or when a volunteer such as yourself gives it a go).

We try and encourage active developers to follow our development environment
(http://udig.refractions.net/confluence/display/ADMIN/02+Development+Environment)
instructions (and fork uDig on github) so you can easily feed us fixes as
needed. That is purely us being greedy (we have to encourage developer
involvement after all).

So give the SDK a go (it can be great on a computer like a netbook with less
horse power), and consider the development environment instructions as a backup
plan.
