Science/Astronomy:

* Galactic Birth Control: Unknown Factor Prevents Star Formation

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/061002_mystery_monday.html

Early galaxies from the universe's distant past grew up much faster than
astronomers anticipated, according to a new study in the current issue of
Astrophysical Journal.

* Mars Rover Opportunity's Victory at Victoria

http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/061002_marsrover_victoriacrater.html

Scientists studying initial on-the-scene images relayed from NASA's Opportunity
Mars rover at Victoria Crater are elated.

* Main Camera on Aging Hubble Shuts Down

http://www.space.com/news/060929_ap_hubble_shutdown.html

The main camera on the Hubble Space Telescope has shut down unexpectedly for
the second time this year, the operators of the orbiting observatory announced
Friday.

Spaceflight:

* Software Revises Neil Armstrong's Moon Quote

http://www.space.com/news/ap_060930_armstrong_quote.html

That's one small word for astronaut Neil Armstrong, one giant revision for
grammar sticklers everywhere.

* NASA's Vision Takes to the Road

http://www.space.com/news/ap_060930_armstrong_quote.html

There's nothing quite like being able to reach out and touch a piece of the
Moon. Knowing that an astronaut (one of only twelve people on the whole planet
Earth) had traveled a quarter million miles across the void of cislunar space,
landed on a barren and dusty surface, stepped out of his cocoon of the lunar
module, picked up that rock, then brought it home again, is a pretty amazing
and daunting thought.

* Committee Warns NASA To Keep CEV on Track

http://www.space.com/spacenews/businessmonday_061002.html

Members of the House Science Committee sought assurances from NASA Sept. 28
that the agency is taking sufficient steps to keep the Orion Crew Exploration
Vehicle from busting its budget and schedule as so many other large agency
programs have in recent years.

* Space Elevator: Hoist to the Heavens

http://www.space.com/news/060929_xprize_cup_elevator.html

Admittedly, at least for now, the idea of a beanstalk-like space elevator
connecting Earth and space is a stretch.

* U.K.'s Starchaser Racing Virgin to Space

http://www.space.com/news/060929_starchaser_unveiling.html

The U.K.-based rocket manufacturing company Starchaser unveiled Thursday its
first prototype rocket at Salford University.
