Science/Astronomy:

* Queen Guitarist Launches Astronomy Book

http://www.space.com/entertainment/ap_061024_queen_astronomy.html

Brian May traded rock 'n' roll for the big bang as he launched a book about the
origins of the universe. May, who abandoned doctoral studies in astronomy to
play guitar with '70s rock legends Queen, has returned to his first love as a
co-author of the book “Bang! The Complete History of the Universe,'' which was
launched Monday.

* Martian Life Could Have Evaded Detection by Viking Landers

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/061024_mars_viking.html

A chemical test used by the Mars Viking landers more than 30 years ago was not
sensitive enough to detect signs of alien life even if they existed, a new
study suggests.

* In Formative Years, the Sun Had Sisters

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/061024_sun_sisters.html

The Sun had sisters when it was born, according to new research, hundreds to
thousands of them.

* Image of the Day: Zombie Crab Nebula

http://www.space.com/imageoftheday/image_of_day_061025.html

A dead star lives on in the form of the Crab Nebula 952 years after its
explosive demise.

Spaceflight:

* Orbital Fire Brigade: Better Smoke Detectors for Future Spacecraft

http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/061025_techwed_smokedetector.html

When your home is an aluminum spacecraft in Earth orbit – hundreds of miles
from the nearest fire station – stifling a potential fire early and fast can be
a lifesaver.

* BLOG: NASA Wants YOU to Name Space Station Piece

http://www.livescience.com/blogs/2006/10/25/nasa-wants-you-to-name-space-station-piece/

If you're a student chock full of ideas, NASA wants your suggestions to name
its Node 2 module: a sort of orbital hub that will bridge new sections of the
International Space Station (ISS).

* NASA's Sun-watching STEREO Satellites Poised for Launch

http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/sfn_061025_stereo_cntdwn.html

Today's launch will be the 319th for a Delta rocket since the program began in
1960, the sixth of 2006 and the 124th for the Delta 2 fleet since debuting in
1989. It is the 60th flight of the 7925 three-stage configuration for Delta 2.

* Decision Time Nears for Hubble-Bound Shuttle Mission

http://www.space.com/news/ap_061024_hubble_shuttle.html

The fate of what some scientists dub “the people's telescope'' is again up in
the air as NASA decides soon whether to squeeze in a last astronaut repair
mission to extend the life of the Hubble Space Telescope.

* Fresh Russian Cargo Ship Bound for ISS

http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/sfn_061024_exp14_prog23.html

A freighter packed with fresh supplies and critical repair parts for the
International Space Station successfully rocketed away from Earth today and
immediately began plotting a three-day trek to the orbiting outpost.

http://www.livescience.com/animalworld/061025_fish_mouth.html

They lack jaws, eyes and bones, but lampreys and their "primitive" anatomy have
survived 360 million years and four major extinctions relatively unaltered,
suggests a new study.

* Vampires a Mathematical Impossibility, Scientist Says
