Are your drives optical? If so then they have a WWN associated with them. How was this drive created? Possibly the /dev symlinks are pointing to the incorrect /device path because your OS was originally installed using a different boot drive? The WWN is in the /devices path name and is not rebuilable with a reconfiguration reboot. The OBP doesn't use /devices which is why your kernel is able to load in the first place. Once the kernel is started, the /dev links point to bad info. HTH.
