Hello Everyone!

This community has some very knowledgeable people and other enthusiasts
(like me!)

Let us make a forum (wiki page , blog etc) where the BOSUG guys can
share info more easily.
It could be a blog, a wiki page.. or even some drupal etc based site.

Let me take an example ( a use case, if you will)
DISCLAIMER (this is *not* a rant, please take this constructively. The
sarcasm, if any, is just for humour and intended to taken positively)

Person X builds package Y for Solaris.
Person A wants to build package B for BeleniX.
package B depends on package Y.

Now the newbie, has to go through the entire process of finding
out/researching etc.. as to how to build package Y its dependencies etc.

Let's see the other (better) scenario

Person X builds package Y for solaris
Person X shares his experience with us all (wiki page/blog etc)
Person A (the newbie) now has a bit of idea as to how port Makefiles etc
to from Linux to Solaris.

End result:
1) It becomes easy for newbies to contribute
2) Newbies learn Solaris better. Appreciate it more.
3) Contributions to OpenSolaris/BeleniX increase a lot from BOSUG
4) Everyone is happy
5) World peace ( *may be*)

If we could please put up a page somewhere it'd be great

We could share things as simple as our .bashrc's ..
or how to get vim with colors (yeah set TERM to dtterm)

Personally, i'd be *very* interested to learn (get tips) as to how to
build packages on OpenSolaris, as most open source software is designed
keeping linux in mind.

IHMO, if a little hand-holding is done in the initial stages,
enthusiasts go a long way.

If we put all this info up somewhere , newbies like me (and newer people
who join) will be greatly helped.

For example, (apropos my previous mail), after someone shares how to
build unixODBC, sqlite3 and cups on Solaris , i'll build Qt 4.2.2 on
Solaris (which i now know how to do).
For someone who's developing qt based apps, or for someone who wants to
fiddle with Qt4, it becomes greatly simplified!
And BOSUG makes a great contribution to OpenSolaris.

And, we could share our .pkgs as well (could we have some ftp space for
that as well? )

I thank you for you patience, if you're reached this far.!!

Regards
Manish Chakravarty

PS: I am in the process of getting a drupal-based site. It'll be hosting
the KDE4 book i'm writing there. If everyone is ok. I'll volunteer to
put stuff up there. (I'm already going to put up the learnings i've had
till now )

PS2: I'll also put up a Qt 4 Compile Howto on my blog as and when it's
done. If we come up with centralized location for stuff, i'll put it up
there as well
