OSS did not help at all... was not able to cleanly install.

Reboot and try running soundon again

Also check that you have not compiled sound support statically
into the kernel.

And after a reboot and
#soundon
oss is already running.

The strange part is that.. all the while audio was working fine. 
suddenly i see this issue.
