What comes to my mind first could be that may you hit the Nagle 
algorithm problem...

I was more thinking about getting different packages for the same 
software. (Like SUNWgrep, BLABLAgrep, XYZgrep).

Don't know about the process, but maybe the community could/should help 
speed up testing? While not the perfect example, Debian is always 
mentioned, when talking about the number of packages. I must admit, I 
have not enough experience about the quality of packages there... But 
maybe the OpenSolaris project could learn something from them...
