London OpenSolaris User Group was formed in June 2005 for people who were interested in OpenSolaris and its purpose was to inform and kick-start the development of the Open Solaris project.
LOSUG informative meetings and technical presentations have been a great success over the years, but since the demise of OpenSolaris, the group has gone through many changes. One main change has been the formation of a Special Interest Group (SIG) within the UK Oracle User Group. UKOUG is an independent organisation created to support the Oracle community, acting as a single independent voice to influence the future design, functionality and technology that is key to all Oracle users. This affiliation has given us the administrative assistance we needed to keep LOSUG running. The committee now considers it is time we changed our name to reflect our position in UKOUG and more importantly enhance the appeal of the group in order to fulfil its potential. In particular, the proposed name change will: - accurately reflect the fact that the group exists to support all the Solaris product-line (Solaris, Solaris 11 Express, Solaris Community releases and Solaris related hardware) and therefore its users; - encourage greater interest from corporate UKOUG members by letting people know that the membership is not just for the open source community, but for anyone who works with Solaris; - broaden the group by dropping the word London to allow growth in other regions - for example, holding conferences or meetings elsewhere in the country in addition to the existing arrangement of monthly London-based meetings. We hope you all understand the reason for the name change and most importantly realise we have the interest of all our members at heart. This means: - our sponsors to remain UKOUG and not any commercial company. - we continue to have presentations on a wide breadth of subjects. - we encourage speakers from the community as well as from Oracle.
