Solaris 10 and Solaris 11 Maintenance Policy and Recommended Best Practice
==========================================================================
Solaris 11 accelerates upon the innovation for which Solaris 10 and
earlier releases are famous. Solaris 11 includes complete network
virtualization, enhanced LDoms and Zones virtualization, leveraging chip
performance enhancements to accelerate the Oracle red stack, is Secure
By Default, and includes many other new and enhanced features.
One key change in Solaris 11 is the single-tier packaging architecture,
Image Packaging System (IPS), which replaces the old 2-tier SVR4-based
patch and packaging architecture. This change wasn't made on a whim. The
architects studied the deficiencies of the old architecture in detail,
addressing the root causes in IPS. Corresponding process and policy
changes and designed to simplify the customer maintenance experience.
Gerry Haskins is the Director of Software Lifecycle Engineering in the
Oracle Systems division. He is responsible for maintenance policies,
processes, and quality for Solaris and SPARC SuperCluster. He is the
author of the popular Patch Corner blog, http://blogs.oracle.com/patch
and the Solaris 11 Lifecycle blog,
http://blogs.oracle.com/Solaris11Life, and is responsible for many of
the Solaris patching improvements made over the last decade.
