OK - well - it's not quite midnight, but I don't care. If I stay up any longer, my eyes will fall out of my head. (Added to that, I'm dry as a bone from being in the hot-box with my servers. GOT to get some proper A/C for this room!!!!!!!)

Somehow I also seem to have missed the addition of Alan Chalmers to the program - who will be talking a little more generically about Hypervisors, which should spark some interesting debate.

See you all Tonight (assuming you are reading this Wednesday morning. If reading it tonight, go to bed!)

Nathan.

Gah - Sorry to follow this up so quickly - but I forgot something...

Our other person on the bill is Alan Chalmers. He's going to be talking a little about hypervisors in general, as well as both Alan and myself sparking what I'm sure will be some spirited discussion about the different approaches to the hypervisors and the varying pros and cons of each.

Bring your discussion shoes!

I'll then be following up with a discussion much more focused on LDOMS. :)

Cheers,

Nathan.

Reminder - it's this Wednesday.

I have most of my hardware for the demo together. Working on the firmware/software/management now. :)

(I'll add that it's currently just cool enough to run up enough kit, so let's hope that the forecast is wrong with the prediction of 32 degrees. :\ )

Please RSVP if you are yet to!

Cheers,

Nathan.

It was great to get back off to a good start in Jan with an excellent discussion of Operations Centre 11g. Many thanks to a much-applauded Gary Riseborough for his excellent discussion and slides. (And for performing under time pressure. ;)

This month, we'll be looking at where LDOMS are really up to, and what we can do with them.

I'd also love to see if we can get a second speaker.

For reference - from our last meeting, we collectively decided we'd like to talk about the following in the coming months: LDOMS, Cluster 4.0, Full scale Ops Centre Demo, DTrace stuff (including a re-intro/primer as we have a bunch of new folks in the group), Solaris 11 (going deep into the new stuff), (eg: ipadm, dladm, tuned versus vanilla, etc), Pillar storage, OEL/OL (Oracle Linux), OVM... Anyone who wants to volunteer would be most welcome. :)

Back to this month's topic... For some time, LDOMS have looked like a great idea that was most of the way to where folks wanted them - but some (from the VMWare world? :) have felt they been missing a few killer features.

Is T4, Live Migration, Cluster support and some of the direct I/O stuff everything we have ever wanted? Can we build highly available configurations that are still live migrateable? Will your apps work?

And - more importantly - is migrateable a word??? ;)

We'll set out to discuss and hopefully demonstrate where we are right now.

Note: The amount of demonstration will be limited by my hardware's ability not to cook itself in the non-air conditioned room it's currently living in. :\

See below for topics/speakers.

Please respond in the positive OR negative ASAP so Pizza and Drinks can be planned.

Where?
Level 5, 417 St Kilda Road, Melbourne, VIC 3004.

*** NOTE THAT THIS ADDRESS IS THE ORACLE BUILDING ***

When?
Wednesday February the 15th at 18:00 for general discussion and merriment.

Speakers start at 18:30 sharp, with Pizza arriving somewhere around 20:00ish.

Speakers / Topics will mostly be (Expect this to be revised with more stuff as more people volunteer):

- Nathan Kroenert - LDOMS - Where are they now?

- Lemme know if you have a topic. I'm looking for topics for *next* month as well...

Soft drink, coffee/tea and Pizza will be available. (YES - FOOD.)

**If you plan to attend, please reply NOW to
nathan.kroen...@optusnet.com.au so that we
can plan for seating / pizza / drinks!**

To anyone who meets with or talks to folks interested in Solaris: Please
let everyone know about the meeting, the time and the date. We would
love to continue to continue to grow the group.

A note on access: The Lifts in the building and entrance to Level 5
automatically lock early in the evening, so access will be provided by
Oracle folks on-site. A sign will also be placed close to the ground
floor lifts with a contact number, should you arrive after the start of
the meeting.

If you are interested in Solaris, doing interesting things with, or on
Solaris, we want YOU!

See our opensolaris project page:

Hope to see many of you there, and if you are not yet on the alias
              ug-msosug at opensolaris.org
consider joining us! (See the project page above for details!)

Cheers!

The Instigators.
