State Department warns Americans away from Central African Republic

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (October 25, 9:10 p.m. PDT) - The State Department is advising Americans not to travel to Central African Republic due to reports of fighting in the capital city of Bangui.

The U.S. Embassy in the central African nation has advised Americans in Bangui to remain in their homes until the situation stabilizes, the department said in a travel warning Friday night.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the mortar, rocket and small arms fire in Bangui, but the travel warning said the latest conflict does not appear to be directed toward U.S. citizens or the general civilian population.

The security situation in the country, plagued by attempted coups and mutinies for the past several years, remains fluid and uncertain, the warning said.
