TWENTY-five years alive, one second dead. It was another ghastly murder in the city yesterday and the Police linked it to love gone sour.

An enraged private security guard shot dead an employee of Ndejje University on Burton Street, just close to the Old Taxi Park.

Joanita Nakiranda, a secretary, was murdered as she saw off two children to school. The bullet ripped through her chest and punched a hole in a container inches from where her body lay.

She was moving when a man with a gun stopped her and talked to her briefly. He pointed the gun at her chest and shot her, a witness said.

People scampered for safety. Others tried to apprehend the assailant. They were terrified because he was armed. He disappeared, the terrified witness said.

Kampala Police chief Ahmed Wafuba said, We have made progress in the investigations. We have not got the culprit but we know who we are looking for.

He identified the suspect as Milton Mukonyi alias Okiria of Kamwanyi, a Kampala suburb. He said the man and Nakiranda had been lovers for a long time but the romance had soured after Nakiranda graduated from Makerere University last year. Mukonyi is a S.4. leaver.

Wafuba said Nakiranda refused to marry Mukonyi, which might have triggered off the conflict. He said Nakiranda recorded a case of rape and threatening violence against Mukonyi at Old Kampala Police Station last month. He knew her movements, he said.

He said Mukonyi telephoned the office at mid-day, saying he was admitted to Mulago Hospital for injuries suffered in a car accident.

He said Mukonyi hails from Bushaki village in Manjiya in Mbale.

The murder, which caused commotion and traffic jam, occurred shortly after 7:30am as people rushed to work.

Another witness said the two children who were with Nakiranda fled. Many women broke down and wept.

A shocked Ndejje University Under-Secretary, Adonia Kyeyune, said Nakirand a joined the institution this month.

This is absurd. This lady had just completed her studies in Makerere. Why would someone kill such a young person? he asked.
