A new law was approved in the Brazilian Senate which
says (my translation of the Brazilian online news. the
original is bellow):
Brazil - Education
Tuesday, October 29th, 2002.
Approved the teaching of Afro-Brazilian history in the
schools.
The Senate approved today the project establishing the
obligatory subjects of Afro-Brazilian culture and
history in the public and private elementary and high
schools. The subject must contain the study of African
History, of the Africans, the fight and survival of
blacks in Brazil, the black Brazilian culture and the
participation of the black people in the national
society.
The intention is to retrieve the contribution of the
black people in the social, economic and political
areas in the history of Brazil. The project also
establish November 20th as the calendar date of the
National Day of Black Consciousness.

estabelecendo que a hist�ria e a cultura
afro-brasileira ser�o temas obrigat�rios nos
estabelecimentos de ensino fundamental e m�dio,
oficiais e particulares. A mat�ria dever� conter
estudo da hist�ria da �frica e dos africanos, a luta
dos negros no Brasil, a cultura negra brasileira e o
negro na forma��o da sociedade nacional.
A inten��o � resgatar a contribui��o do povo negro nas
�reas social, econ�mica e pol�tica pertinentes �
Hist�ria do Brasil. A proposta estabelece tamb�m que
20 de novembro ser� o Dia Nacional da Consci�ncia
Negra, no calend�rio escolar.
