Daudi Migereko, the state minister for energy, has said one of the biggest problems in schools in Busoga are jiggers that attack children because they study in classrooms with uncemented floors.
Jiggers are giving us a lot of problems, Migereko said on Saturday while handing over 300 desks donated by Standard Chartered Bank to Nyenga Primary school.
Migereko appealed to individuals and organisations making donations to schools in Busoga to consider giving them cement to make concrete floors that would reduce the jigger epidemic.
We need cement for these classrooms, he said.
The ceremony was marked by songs and poems from the pupils.
The children expressed gratitude towards the Governments Universal Primary Education programme and thanked Standard Chartered Bank for the sh6m donation of desks to the 400 pupils.
Present at the function was Ministry of Education official Florence Malinga, who said the bank had saved the children from learning poor writing habits from the floor. Ends
