Kitgum district is now on MTN's mobile phone network.
The district will be officially switched on over the weekend.
However, many passengers were by yesterday still stranded at Gulu Bus Park as
bus operators suspended services between Gulu and Kitgum.
Operators cited intensified rebel ambushes along the 100km stretch between
the two towns.
Kitgum LC-V Chairman, Nahaman Ojwee told The Monitor, Nov. 26, that more than
30 people have been killed and 15 vehicles destroyed in two months.
Eleven people were killed on Nov. 11 when an Otada bus was ambushed.
Bus services have been suspended since Nov. 14. ANNK, the second bus company
plying the route, has also suspended services.
Ojwee wants the army to resume convoys to protect travellers-- especially
between Aswa River Bridge (48kms) and Acholibur (80kms).
"It is very difficult to explain to the people. We have lost very useful
citizens along this stretch," he said.
