20 Ugandans arrested in Kenya
By Geoffrey Kamali
TWO simultaneous terrorist attacks on an
Israeli-owned hotel and a charter plane in the Kenyan town of Mombasa have spelt
doom for foreigners visiting the country.
Over 20 Ugandans were arrested
in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, over the weekend after a police swoop on a
number of hotels and lodges in the city. Most of the Ugandans were said to have
had passports and were in Nairobi for business.
They were reportedly
resting in their rooms when dozens of plain-clothes security officers raided the
hotels and ordered them to board vans to Kamkunji Police station.
But
Kenyan police spokesman, Kingori Mwangi, said yesterday only nine Ugandans were
taken to court on Monday for lack of valid travel documents.
The
majority were released. Nine were taken to court. As per now, there is none
still left in custody, he said.
Among those arrested were Erasmus
Kasozi, Haji Nyanzi, Josephine Mirembe, Sewanyana, Lubowa and Lumisha.
The suspects reportedly protested against the arrest, saying they were
East Africans who should not be mistreated. It was not clear how many other
foreign nationals were arrested in the swoop.
Sources said the suspects
were picked from a number of hotels, including Waves, Top-In-One, Disney, Swanga
and others on River Road and Duruma Road.
Security all over Kenya has
been beefed up following attacks in which 10 Kenyans and three Israelis were
killed in suicide attacks.
The attackers also attempted to bring down an
Arkia airliner carrying 261 Israeli tourists on its way back to Tel Aviv. Two
suspects were immediately held over the attacks.
