Libyan Military Roles in African Wars
.c The Associated Press
Some of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's military interventions in sub-Saharan
Africa:
CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC, 2001 to present - Libyan troops sent by Gadhafi
defend unpopular President Ange-Felix Patasse against coup attempts - three
times, and counting.
CONGO, DECEMBER 2002 to present- Congo accuses Libya of flying arms,
ammunition and tanks to Congolese rebel group. Libya denies charge, says arms
are for government of neighboring Central African Republic.
IVORY COAST, 2002 to present- Libya, Liberia and Burkina Faso reject
allegations of running guns, fighters and cash to Ivory Coast rebels.
CONGO, 1998 - Gadhafi pays to send 1,000 Chad troops to rebellion-torn Congo.
Lost, most Chad troops are surrounded and killed. Survivors walk home.
BURKINA FASO, 1987 to present - Blaise Compaore, trained in Gadhafi's
guerrilla camps, seizes power in bloody takeover. Libya and Burkina Faso deny
repeated accusations of gunrunning to West Africa hot spots.
SIERRA LEONE, 1991 to 2002 - Foday Sankoh, likewise trained in Gadhafi's
guerrilla camps, launches terror campaign for diamond fields. Campaign fails;
untold tens of thousands killed, raped, or maimed.
LIBERIA, 1989-1996 - Charles Taylor, another graduate of Gadhafi's guerrilla
camps, launches seven-year civil war. Fighting leaves 200,000 dead, 1 million
homeless and Taylor president, in 1997.
UGANDA, 1980-1985 - Yoweri Museveni, trained in Gadhafi's guerrilla camps,
launches guerrilla campaign for power, using Libyan fighter-training and
arms. Museveni, now president, orders out subsequent Libya foray by hundreds
of Libyan ``peacekeepers'' in 1998.
CHAD, 1980-1989 - Gadhafi sends Libyan forces into neighboring Chad. Chad
drives out Libyans only in late 1980s.
