Matek Fighting rages around eastern Congo town BUJUMBURA, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Several people were killed on Sunday when militia allied to the Congolese government staged a fresh attack on rebels holding the eastern town of Uvira, spokesmen for both sides in the conflict said. Fighting has flared around Uvira and parts of northeastern Congo in the past week, dampening hopes that a peace deal signed in December will stop violence that has since forced thousands of people to flee their homes. A spokesman for the Mai Mai militia loosely allied to the Democratic Republic of Congo government said they had killed four rebel soldiers in an attack on Uvira on Sunday. "Within two or three days Uvira will be under Mai Mai control," the spokesman, Manace Bita, told Reuters. The Mai Mai -- tribal warriors who use "magic" amulets in the hope of warding off bullets -- say they want to seize the swathes of eastern Congo occupied by the country's biggest rebel group, the Congolese Rally for Democracy (RCD). Rebels and Mai Mai have clashed repeatedly in the past week, forcing hundreds of people to flee into neighbouring Burundi. The RCD rebels, who are backed by neighbouring Rwanda, said they had killed about 10 Mai Mai combatants during the fighting. The RCD accuses Congolese President Joseph Kabila of breaking the December deal by backing the Mai Mai and Rwandan and Burundian rebels who they say also joined the attack. "The peace deal is now in a state of limbo because Kabila has violated the ceasefire," RCD Secretary General Azarias Ruberwa told Reuters in the eastern Congolese city of Goma, which serves as the rebels' headquarters. The RCD, which is backed by neighbouring Rwanda, recaptured Uvira in late December after three days of fighting with the Mai Mai. The town has changed hands repeatedly in recent months. Congo's warring parties signed a deal in mid-December to share power and reunify the country that has been sliced apart since war broke out in August 1998, sucking in six foreign armies. Many foreign soldiers have pulled out, but local militia violence has surged in the vacuum. Aid agency Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF) said on Saturday that about 155,000 people had been uprooted by clashes between rebel factions in northeastern Congo in the past few months. =============================================================Intelligence report, has revealed that that Museveni has secretly deployed UPDF troops in DRC Congo to help BEMBA's Forces in the fight now raging in Eastern DRC!!
