Tax officials find stolen motors scheduled to be sent to
Nigeria
2003/1/21 TAIEPI, Taiwan, The China Post staff The China Post staff Tax officials in Taichung yesterday discovered a shipment of motors stripped from stolen cars that was scheduled to be sent to Nigeria. Taichung Tax Administration director Chan Chao-huan said the find came during an inspection of three 20 foot freight containers that were set to shipped out of the Taichung Harbor. The containers were supposed to be holding second-hand freight trucks being exported to Nigeria. Instead, they were found to contain motors from between 70 and 80 vehicles that had been previously stolen, Chan said. The find came close on the heels of an earlier discovery of hot motorcycles being sent out of the country under false pretenses. Chan said that last week investigators from his department discovered that a batch of second-hand motorcycles scheduled to be shipped from Taiwan were stolen property. The find led tax officials to keep a closer watch on freight containers that were supposed to be holding used cars and motorcycles. After yesterday's discovery, Chan said that the investigation would be widened to try to find out who was behind the shipments. Chan pointed out that automobile theft has continued to be a problem in Taiwan, with levels of reported thefts remaining constant despite efforts on behalf of law enforcement officials to crack down on car thieves. |
