Buganda sets city surety
Buganda has proposed measures to prevent any regional government from evicting the central government from any part of the country, reports Josephine Maseruka.
The proposal aims at convincing the central government to include Kampala city in Buganda.
The officials are of the view that if a provision barring any regional government from evicting the central government in any part of Uganda is included in the Constitution, it will be enough security for the central government to have Kampala, the capital city in Buganda kingdom without any fears of being evicted.
They also want the Constitution to grant the central government full powers to acquire land or properties from any region in the national interest.
These are some of the measures set not to evict the central government from any region. The views are contained in the 157-page document of Bugandas proposals to the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC).
They said with the provisions in place, it would be impossible for any regional government to evict the central government, or prevent it from any lawful business in any part of Uganda.
The people of Buganda have great cultural and historical ties to Kampala district. It is therefore illogical for the Constitution to provide that Kampala district is not part of Buganda, the proposal read.
Baganda argue that Kampala district houses most important, cherished and sacred traditional sites of the kingdom.
