NECESSITY: Ssendaula |
By Steven Odeu OVERALL Defence expenditure is expected to rise by sh49bn this fiscal year after a 26% cut from some ministries, Finance Minister Gerald Ssendaula has said.
Ssendaula, addressing the press on the state of the economy on Thursday, said the defence budget would increase because of the situation in northern Uganda that now requires heavier deployment of military logistics.
He said the Defence expenditure, previously estimated at sh230bn, would go up to sh262bn after adding the $17m already sourced from other ministries.
The government recently directed some ministries to cut their budget to help fund the military offensive against LRA rebels in the north.
Affected ministries include Presidents Office (by 14%), Prime Ministers Office (15%), Ministry of Finance (15%), Ministry of Agriculture (15%), Lands (14%), Education (10%), Local Government (13%), Health (4%) and Housing (3%).
About sh51.16bn is to be transferred from the affected ministries to Defence. Of this, sh24.8bn will be from the development and sh18.8bn from the recurrent expenditure. Ends
